Background

The Olympiad competition has become the most prestigious Olympiad in the world since 1959. The Indonesian joined the competition in 1969 in Australia, but it did not produce maximum results. This was constrained in terms of knowledge – skills and also language. The participants did not have knowledge – skills that are High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and were also constrained by a lack of understanding of English.

Slowly but surely, the Indonesian government began to improve itself in holding trainings and until now it has succeeded in making achievements in the most prestigious Olympiad competition arena. However, it is limited to big cities and even certain schools or what is termed TSATA (That School Again That Again). So that many regions have not received information and training even though the material being tested is not included in the curriculum which is studied daily at school.

Many Matematics and Science Olympiad competitions are held by independent bodies locally, regionally, nationally and even internationally. The Indonesian government, in this case the Ministry of National Education, has been planning a National Science Olympiad since 2003, starting from the district/city level selection (OSK) to the Provincial level selection (OSP) and the best will compete at the National level (OSN). The best of the best OSN is ready for the international level. In 2020, the National Science Olympiad (OSN) changed its name to the National Science Competition (KSN) according to directions from KOI (Indonesia Olympic Committee) because the words and logo are the property of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which are protected by law. This was carried out in order to support the Indonesian government in preparing itself to host the Olympics in 2032. But in 2023, the Ministry of Education and Culture uses the word “Olympiad” so that KSN becomes OSN again

We cannot deny that the quality of education depends on several factors, namely the ability and motivation of the students themselves, the availability of materials, the quality of the educators, etc. If the students in suburban areas also have these factors. Undoubtedly, they will be able to compete and even compete with the students from big cities even the students from abroad.
